Benefits of working in a Care Home Nursing Role

MarketingUncategorized

Care homes is an umbrella term for both residential homes and nursing homes.

They can include everything from supported living where adults with learning difficulties live independently in the community with the assistance of support workers, through to nursing homes for adults with severe medical conditions which have caused their health to deteriorate to the extent that they need advanced nursing care to ensure their safety.

Nursing in residential settings can appear as though it is under the radar in comparison to working in a hospital. Nursing homes offer a wonderful opportunity to deliver care that is uniquely person centred. There are many benefits such as:

  • Development of Nursing skills –

Often, you may be working independently on your floor during your shift which will mean you oversee the care of anything from 10 residents to 30 with the support of care staff. This means delegating work to each member of the team and be accountable for whatever happens on the shift whilst you are on duty. Throughout this you may be required to use skilled communication techniques with residents, manage the environment, administer medications using skilled communication, provide complex end of life care, write complex care plans, liaise with GP’s, therapists, hospitals, families and other community teams.

  • There are key opportunities for career progression –

You have the opportunity to learn new skills from those you work with whilst working in a care home environment, such as:

  • Respiratory care
  • Interpreting diagnostic tests
  • Medicines management
  • Wound management
  • Tissue Viability
  • Sepsis
  • Assessment, discharge and end of life care
  • Getting to know those you care for can be very rewarding –

When you work in a care home, you’ll have the opportunity to really get to know the people in your care. There are few things more fundamentally rewarding than caring for other people. Whether this is helping to empower a person to enjoy their day, supporting them with short or long term health needs, or even smoothing the way for someone as they reach the end of their life – caring for others is a huge privilege.
